Location: 45 miles northwest of Hays, Kansas, on US 24 between Hill City and Stockton.
Facilities: Visitor center includes exhibits on the history of Nicodemus and Blacks in the West.
Activities: Tours (during summer season).
Special Features: Nicodemus, Kansas is the only remaining western town established by African Americans during the Reconstruction Period following the Civil War, and represents the western expansion and settlement of the Great Plains. It is the site of the oldest reported post office supervised by African Americans in the United States. The site includes five buildings: The First Baptist Church, St. Francis Hotel, Nicodemus School District Number One, African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Township Hall (all privately owned).
