Nierenberg, William Aaron

Nierenberg, William Aaron (1919–  ) oceanographer; born in New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1939, worked on the Manhattan Project from 1942–45, received a Ph.D. from Columbia University, and taught physics there and at the Universities of Michigan and California: Berkeley. He directed the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif., from 1965–86. For many years he served as a government adviser on scientific issues.
