Nifontova, Rufina Dmitrievna 

Born Sept. 15, 1931, in Moscow. Soviet Russian actress. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1966).

In 1955, Nifontova graduated from the department of acting of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. Since 1958 she has worked at the Malyi Theater. She made her debut in the role of Nastia in the film Freemen (1956; awarded a prize at the Ninth International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary), for which she received wide acclaim. Other film roles have included Katia in the trilogy The Way Through Hell (The Sisters, 1957; 1918, 1958; Gloomy Morning, 1959) and Jenny Marx in One Year Like a Lifetime (1966).

Nifontova’s stage roles have included Ilona in Wuolijoki’s The Stone Nest, Barbara in Gorky’s The Summer People, Katerina in Ostrovskii’s The Storm, and the Commissar in Vishnerskii’s An Optimistic Tragedy.
