Nikita Aleksandrovich Toropov

Toropov, Nikita Aleksandrovich 

Born June 28 (July 11), 1908, in St. Petersburg; died July 6, 1968, in Leningrad. Soviet mineralogist and chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1962).

Toropov graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1930. He was affiliated with the Lensovet Leningrad Institute of Technology from 1930 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1953 and with the Giprotsement Institute from 1941 to 1944. In 1953 he became director of the Institute of Silicate Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Toropov’s main works dealt with the mineralogy of silicates and the physicochemical study of silicate systems. He also worked on a number of problems in the physical chemistry of semiconductors and ferrite materials.

Toropov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1952. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
