Nikitin, Sergei Nikolaevich
Born Jan. 23 (Feb. 4), 1851, in Moscow; died Nov. 5 (18), 1909, in St. Petersburg. Russian geologist, hydrogeologist, and paleontologist. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1902). Nikitin graduated from Moscow University in 1871. He was a senior geologist at the Geological Committee from its inception (1882) and was one of the organizers of the hydrogeological study of Russia. His principal works dealt with the stratigraphy of the Carboniferous, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods of Central Russia, the Permian period of the Cisurals, and the hy-drogeology of European Russia. In his paleontological works, which are devoted to Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites, he developed evolutionary theories.
