Nikol’skii, Vladimir Kapitonovich 

Born Sept. 8 (20), 1894, in Yaroslavl; died Oct. 17, 1953, in Moscow. Soviet historian; doctor of historical sciences (1943).

Nikol’skii graduated from Moscow University in 1916. He taught in institutions of higher education in Moscow and from 1930 to 1946 was a professor at Moscow State University. Nikol’skii’s early works were devoted to the history of Russia in the 17th century. In the 1920’s he was one of the first Soviet historians to do research on the history of primitive society. He studied a number of problems of clan and tribal structure and investigated the origin of religion.
