Popov, Nil Aleksandrovich 

Born Mar. 28 (Apr. 9), 1833, in Bezhetsk, now in Kalinin Oblast; died Dec. 22, 1891 (Jan. 3, 1892), in Moscow. Russian historian, Slavicist, archivist, corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1883).

Popov graduated from Moscow University in 1854. He was an academic assistant at the university of Kazan from 1857 to 1859. From 1860 he taught at Moscow University and became a professor in 1869. In 1885, he was appointed to direct the Moscow Archive of the Ministry of Justice. Popov studied the history of the Slavic countries and Russia. He was close to the post-reform Slavophiles and served in the 1860’s as secretary of the Moscow Slavic Committee. He published several collections of documents concerning the history of Russia of the 15th to 17th centuries.
