Ninilchik State Recreation Area Location: On the west side of the Kenai Peninsula, about 40 miles south of Soldotna on Sterling Highway. Facilities: 4 camping areas (some sites @di), picnic sites at Ninilchik Campground (é) and Ninilchik Overlook, picnic shelter (é) at Ninilchik Campground, toilets (é), drinking water, boat launch at Ninilchik Beach site, scenic overlook. Activities: Camping, fishing (except at Ninilchik View Campground), clamming, ATV riding (on saltwater beaches only). Special Features: Ninilchik is the site of world class salmon and halibut fishing. Park vistas include Mount Iliamna and Mount Redoubt, both active volcanoes. Nearby is historical Ninilchik Village, originally settled by Russian colonists, and a Russian Orthodox Church built in 1900. The name Ninilchik means "peaceful settlement by a river."
