On the central eastern border of WY, east of Casper, created Feb 14, 1911 from Converse County. Name Origin: For the Niobrara River, which flows through the county, or for the Niobrara Indian tribe; from an Omaha-Poca Indian word ni obthantha ko 'spreading water river.'

Area (sq mi): 2627.90 (land 2625.81; water 2.09). Pop per sq mi: 0.90.
Pop 2005: 2,286. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.00%; 1990-2000 -3.70%. Pop 2000: 2,407 (White 97.10%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.50%; Asian 0.10%; Other 1.70%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 42.80.
Income 2000: per capita $15,757; median household $29,701; Pop below poverty level: 13.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,588-$30,241.
Unemployment 2004: 3.80%. Change from 2000: 0.50%. Median travel time to work: 14.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 7.00%.
