Nirod, Fedor Fedorovich 

Born Mar. 31 (Apr. 13), 1907, in St. Petersburg. Soviet stage designer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1946.

Nirod studied at the Kiev Art Institute from 1926 to 1930. His set designs, which deal with heroic dramatic themes, are characterized by a picturesque treatment of space. Nirod has designed sets for the play Uriel Acosta by Gutzkow (1938; the M. Zan’-kovts’a Ukrainian Drama Theater in Zaporozh’e) and the play Svichka’s Marriage by Kocherga (1959; the I. Franko Academic Ukrainian Dramatic Theater in Kiev). His work at the T. G. Shevchenko Ukrainian Theater of Opera and Ballet in Kiev has included the sets for the operas The Barber of Seville by Rossini (1945), Arsenal by Maiboroda (1960), and Abessalom and Eteri by Paliashvili (1972) and the ballet Spartacus by Khachaturian (1964). Nirod has been awarded the Order of Lenin and a number of medals.
