Nizhnevartovsk

Nizhnevartovsk (nyēzh'nyĭvär`təfsk), city (1989 pop. 241,000), N Siberian Russia. The discovery of a huge oil field at nearby Lake Samotlor in 1965 quickly transformed the small village of Nizhnevartovsk into an oil and gas center. The population quintupled in the 1970s as hundreds of thousands of oil workers settled in the region.
Nizhnevartovsk 

a city (a settlement until 1972) under okrug jurisdiction, administrative center of Nizhnevartovsk Raion, Khanty-Mansi National Okrug, Tiumen’ Oblast, RSFSR. A port on the right bank of the Ob’ River. Population, 35,000 (1973). Nizhnevartovsk arose after the discovery and development of the nearby Samotlor oil fields. The Samotlor-Al’met’evsk oil pipeline was constructed there; the Aleksan-drovskoe-Nizhnevartovsk-Ust’-Balyk-Omsk oil pipeline also runs through the city.
