Nollekens, Joseph

Nollekens, Joseph (nŏl`ĭkənz), 1737–1823, English sculptor, b. London. He studied in Rome and in 1770 returned to London, where he became the most fashionable portrait sculptor of his day. Among his famous busts are those of George III, the younger Pitt, Charles James Fox (1792, private coll.), Laurence Sterne (1766, National Portrait Gall., London), and Benjamin West. His numerous statues and groups in marble include Cupid and Psyche and Bacchus.
