NSAIDs

 or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Drugs that reduce inflammation and are effective against pain (see analgesic) and fever. Most are available without prescription and are usually used for short periods for mild pain. Aspirin is technically an NSAID, but the term is generally applied to a newer class of drugs, including ibuprofen and similar drugs (e.g., naproxen, ketoprofen) that, like aspirin, inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. They act with fewer side effects, but aspirin-sensitive people should not use them.

A compound found in extra-virgin olive oil inhibits the activity of COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, acting in the same way as ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Under this contract, the company, in collaboration with Professor Tohru Mizushima at the Faculty of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kumamoto University, will proceed with research on next-generation nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
FDA also asked Pfizer and other companies to highlight safety warnings in the package inserts that are distributed with certain other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs.
