(until 1974) an administrative division of Yorkshire, now constituting most of North Yorkshire

North Riding 

a former administrative division (together with the East Riding and the West Riding) of the county of Yorkshire in Great Britain. Located in northeastern England. Area, 5,500 sq km. Population, 724,500 (1971). In 1974 most of the North Riding became part of the county of North Yorkshire.
