On central eastern border of PA, east of Allentown; organized Mar 11, 1752 from Bucks County. Name Origin: For Northamptonshire, England, home of Thomas Penn's father-in-law, Thomas Fermor, the Earl of Pomfret.

Area (sq mi): 377.36 (land 373.80; water 3.56). Pop per sq mi: 769.80.
Pop 2005: 287,767. State rank: 13. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.80%; 1990-2000 8.10%. Pop 2000: 267,066 (White 88.20%; Black or African American 2.80%; Hispanic or Latino 6.70%; Asian 1.40%; Other 4.70%). Foreign born: 4.60%. Median age: 38.50.

    On the southern border of Delmarva peninsula, bounded on the west by Chesapeake Bay and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Original county; organized 1634 as Accawmack County; name changed 1642-43. Name Origin: Possibly for Spencer Compton (1601-32), 2nd Earl of Northampton.
