In southwestern VA. Incorporated as a town in 1894; as a city in 1954. Name Origin: For Eckstein Norton, Louisville and National Railroad president, 1886-91. Originally called Prince's Flats, probably for William Prince, a settler in the area about 1787.

Pop 2005: 3,677. State rank: 133. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.80%; 1990-2000 -8.10%. Pop 2000: 3,904 (White 90.90%; Black or African American 6.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 1.00%; Other 1.30%). Foreign born: 1.10%. Median age: 39.00.
Income 2000: per capita $16,024; median household $22,788; Pop below poverty level: 22.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,469-$20,474.
Unemployment 2004: 5.30%. Change from 2000: 0.20%. Median travel time to work: 18.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 40.90%.

Norton 

a sound in the Bering Sea along western Alaska, south of the Seward Peninsula. Norton Sound is about 200 km long and up to 145 km wide. Its depth is generally between 10 and 20 m, reaching a maximum of 27 m. The shores are mostly low-lying and are strongly dissected. There are many islands. The sound is covered with ice from November to June. The port city of Nome is located on the sound’s northern shore.
