Norton Utilities

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Norton Utilities
Widely used utility programs for Windows and Macintosh from Symantec. Used to fix problems and fine tune the machine, they include functions to restore deleted files, diagnose the disk for corrupted data, defragment the disk and clean up and track changes to the Registry. The Norton Utilities are available as a separate product or part of various suites. Originally from Peter Norton Computing and introduced for DOS, these programs were the first to popularize disk utilities for the PC.

Peter Norton
Peter Norton is the most famous name in utilities. The floppy disk on the automobile lift on this 1988 booklet cover illustrated the concept of fine tuning a computer to keep it running well. (Image courtesy of Peter Norton.)
