Notkin, Aleksandr Il’ich 

Born Jan. 28 (Feb. 10), 1901, in Lugansk, now Voroshilovgrad. Soviet economist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1976).

Notkin graduated from the Moscow Institute of the National Economy in 1925. Beginning in 1927, he held various teaching positions—for example, at Moscow State University, at the Moscow Institute of Transport Engineers, and at the Academy of Foreign Trade. In 1938 he joined the staff of the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where he was head of the department of reproduction and head of the division of rates and proportions. He has helped work out a number of five-year plans for development of the national economy of the USSR, the general plan for 1961–80, and the forecast for 1976–90. His principal works deal with the methodology of political economy, reproduction, and the structure and efficiency of social production. Notkin has been awarded six orders as well as various medals.
