māä`), town (1992 est. pop. 75,000), chief port and capital of the French overseas territory of New Caledonia New Caledonia, Fr. Nouvelle Calédonie, internally self-governing territory of France (2005 est. pop. 216,000), land area 7,241 sq mi (18,760 sq km), South Pacific, c.700 mi (1,130 km) E of Australia...... Local industry, dominated by the nearby Doniambo nickel smelter, include cementworks, foods and beverages, agricultural processing, and apparel production. It was the site of a U.S. airfield in World War II. Nouméa is the seat of the SPC (formerly the South Pacific Commission), an international body formed in 1947 to promote the economic and social welfare of Pacific island people. On the town's outskirts is the Tjibaou Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano. The town was a French penal colony from 1864 to 1897. Nouméaformerly Port-de-FranceCity (pop., 2004: 91,386), port, and capital of New Caledonia territory. Located on the southwestern coast of New Caledonia Island, it was founded in 1854 as Port-de-France. The city is situated on an excellent deepwater harbour protected by Nou Island and a reef. It has modern buildings, a large public market, and St. Joseph's Cathedral, a 19th-century stone structure. Nouméa the capital of New Caledonia, a French possession. Population, 57,800 (1971).
