Ronay has cited the re-envisioning of the traditional novel carried out by Italo Calvino and nouveau roman authors as an influence.
Were these adult forms--think of the nouveau roman, hypertext, or gonzo journalism--critical publications all across the land would be discussing, celebrating, evaluating the achievements.
This insight has bred countless "literary" detective novels; and in France (where the roman policier has always been taken more seriously) it influenced the development of the nouveau roman in the 1960s.
