Novi

Novi

a city in Italy (Piedmont region).

Near Novi on Aug. 4 (15), 1799, during Suvorov’s Italian campaign of 1799, the Russian and Austrian forces (65,000 men) commanded by A. V. Suvorov defeated the French Army (38,000 men) commanded by General B. C. Joubert, who was killed at the beginning of the battle and replaced by General J. Moreau. The French lost up to 13,000 men. Because of the fatigue of the troops (the fighting lasted 15 hours) and the opposition of the Austrian generals, the pursuit was limited to the field of battle, permitting the French forces to withdraw and occupy a defensive position to the north of Genoa. The victory at Novi did not lead to the final crushing of the French in northern Italy, because on August 16 (27), Suvorov received an order to take his Russian troops into Switzerland.
