Novozhilov, Genrikh Vasil’evich
Born Oct. 27, 1925, in Moscow. Soviet aircraft designer. Hero of Socialist Labor (1971); doctor of sciences in technology (1975). Member of the CPSU since 1951. A student of S. V. Uyushin’s. After graduating from the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Institute of Aviation in 1949, Novozhilov began a career in the aviation industry. In 1970 he became the principal designer at the S. V. Ilyushin Experimental Design Office. Novozhilov directed the development of the Il–76T transport airplane and the Il–86, the first Soviet wide-body passenger airplane, or airbus. Novozhilov was a deputy to the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He received the Lenin Prize in 1970. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
