Noyes, William Albert (1857–1941) chemist; born in Independence, Iowa. From 1886–1903 he studied camphor derivatives at Rose Polytechnic Institute (Terre Haute, Ind.), becoming chief chemist at the National Bureau of Standards (1903–07). There he determined atomic weights and obtained the hydrogen:oxygen weight ratio. He became director of the chemical laboratories at the University of Illinois (1907–26).
