Nurmukhammedov, Nagim-Bek Dzhemal’-Ed-Dinovich
Born Nov. 6, 1924, in the village of Saitandy, in what is now Semipalatinsk Oblast. Soviet painter and art scholar. People’s Artist of the Kazakh SSR (1974). Nurmukhammedov studied at the I. E. Repin Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture under R. R. Frents from 1947 to 1953. Since 1959 he has worked in Alma-Ata. Among the portraits he has painted is one of I. S. Isakov, an admiral of the USSR Navy (1967, Central Naval Museum, Leningrad). He also does landscapes (The Alatau Foothills, 1966, T. G. Shevchenko Kazakh Art Gallery, Alma-Ata), genre paintings (Papa Is Coming, 1960, T. G. Shevchenko Kazakh Art Gallery, Alma-Ata), and historical paintings (The Turgai Steppes, 1919; painted 1971–72).
