ChewaBantu-speaking people of eastern Zambia, northwestern Zimbabwe, and Malawi. They practice shifting (slash-and-burn) agriculture and they hunt and fish. Slavery was once universal among the Chewa. Descent, inheritance, and succession are matrilineal and polygyny is general.
