Nye, James Warren (1815–76) governor, U.S. senator; born in Madison County, New York. A gifted orator, he was appointed governor of the Nevada Territory (Rep.; 1861–64), where he helped suppress the pro-slavery forces. He then served Nevada as one of its first two U.S. senators (1864–73).
