In south-central NV; organized Feb 16, 1864 from Esmeralda County; largest county in NV. Name Origin: For James Warren Nye (1814-76), NY statesman, governor of NV Territory (1861-64), and U.S. senator from NV (1864-73).

Area (sq mi): 18158.73 (land 18146.66; water 12.07). Pop per sq mi: 2.20.
Pop 2005: 40,477. State rank: 7. Pop change: 2000-20005 24.60%; 1990-2000 82.70%. Pop 2000: 32,485 (White 84.70%; Black or African American 1.20%; Hispanic or Latino 8.40%; Asian 0.80%; Other 8.40%). Foreign born: 5.00%. Median age: 42.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,962; median household $36,024; Pop below poverty level: 10.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,201-$25,752.
Unemployment 2004: 5.70%. Change from 2000: -0.90%. Median travel time to work: 28.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 24.10%.
