O'Brien, Fitz-James

O'Brien, Fitz-James (1828–62) writer; born in Cork, Ireland. Seeking money and adventure, he emigrated to New York City (1852). There, he continued his work as a journalist and free-lance writer, and wrote poetry, short stories, and plays. He is best known for his macabre horror stories, as in "The Diamond Lens," first published in the Atlantic Monthly (1858). Volunteering for service in the Union army in the Civil War, he was wounded and died of tetanus.
