O'Brien, Jeremiah

O'Brien, Jeremiah (1744–1818) Revolutionary hero; born in Kittery, Maine. He ably defended Machias, Maine (then part of Massachusetts) against British vessels and captured the British Margaretta in what as counted as the first naval battle of the American Revolution. He commanded privateers (1777–80) and was captured and briefly imprisoned in England (1780).
