object moduleThe output of an assembler or compiler, which is in the machine code of the target computer. Object modules must be linked with other modules to create the final executable program. The linking process resolves all external references between modules which includes the function calls and references to data. This "object" term goes way back to the early days of computing and has no relationship to object-oriented programming.
