Obolenskii, Vladimir Nikolaevich
Born July 15 (27), 1877; died 1942, in Leningrad. Soviet meteorologist. Obolenskii graduated from Moscow University in 1901. From 1915 to 1938 he was a professor at the Forestry Institute (now the Academy of Forestry Technology in Leningrad). From 1921 to 1923 he was the director of the Main Physical Observatory, and from 1932 to 1940, director of the Institute of Experimental Meteorology in Leningrad, which was established on his initiative. From 1938 to 1942 he was head of the subdepartment of meteorology and climatology at Leningrad State University. His main works were in atmospheric electricity, the physics of clouds and precipitation, and the physics of the surface layer of the air. Obolenskii was an initiator of work on methods to precipitate and disperse clouds and fog. WORKSMeteorologiia, parts 1–2.
