Ochsner, (Edward William) Alton (1896–1981) surgeon; born in Kimball, S.D. He chaired the surgical department at Tulane University (1927–56) and cofounded the Alton Ochsner Clinic there. A chest surgeon of international renown, he argued that cigarettes can cause cancer. His zealous campaign against the tobacco industry included three books about cancer and smoking. An ardent genealogist, he discovered that the mother of famed early physician, Paracelsus (1493–1541), was an Ochsner.
