On the northwestern border of SC, west of Greenville; organized Jan 29, 1868 from Pickens County. Name Origin: For an Indian word of uncertain meaning. Possibly refers to the mythical Cherokee snake dragon, or to mean 'water eyes of the hills' or 'beautiful springs.'

Area (sq mi): 673.58 (land 625.41; water 48.17). Pop per sq mi: 111.30.
Pop 2005: 69,577. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.10%; 1990-2000 15.20%. Pop 2000: 66,215 (White 88.00%; Black or African American 8.40%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 0.40%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 39.50.
Income 2000: per capita $18,965; median household $36,666; Pop below poverty level: 10.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,108-$26,201.
