Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area

Location: 35 miles east of Julian via Highway 78, or about 20 miles west of Highway 86.
Facilities: Picnic tables, pay showers; no drinking water.
Activities: Tent camping, ORV riding.
Special Features: Ocotillo Wells SVRA is a motorcycle, four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicle, and dune buggy use area, with more than 70,000 acres of desert available for off-highway exploration and recreation. The wash-and-ridge terrain includes a butte with dunes and a sand bowl, a blow-sand dune, springs, and a camp on a former homestead site. Area is adjacent to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (see separate entry).

California's Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area is one of the last free rides in the nation's biggest state park system, which went through a run of layoffs, reassignments and reorganization during the recession of the early '90s, and lost most of its federal aid.
