Odintsov, Mikhail Mikhailovich 

Born Oct. 23 (Nov. 5), 1911, in Irkutsk. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1958.

In 1936, Odintsov graduated from the University of Irkutsk, where he became a professor in 1949. From 1931 to 1937 he worked for the Eastern Siberian Geological Exploration and Resource Exploitation Trust. Between 1937 and 1954 he taught at higher educational institutions in Irkutsk, and in 1954 he became director of the Institute of the Earth’s Crust of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Odintsov’s major works deal with the geology and formation of minerals of the Siberian Platform; he has, for example, elucidated the regularities in the pattern of distribution of kimberlites. He also participated in the discovery of the Siberian diamond-bearing province. A deputy to the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, Odintsov has been awarded two orders of Lenin and a number of medals.
