karaoke(Japanese; “empty orchestra”) Use of a device that plays instrumental accompaniments to songs with the vocal tracks removed, permitting the user to sing the lead. Karaoke apparently first appeared in the amusement quarter of Kobe, Japan, where it became popular among businessmen in the late 1970s. It gained widespread popularity in the U.S. in the late 1980s. It is usually featured at bars, where patrons can perform on a stage and sing popular hits by reading lyrics electronically displayed on a monitor. A video film often accompanies the music. The three-song 7 inch Get Punched (on Jonnycat Records) is another three out of four, with traded off vocal duties and top speed delivery. Even though I've known her since 1978, I'm still in awe of her as a singer and groove mistress While other caterwauling divas blow off vocal riffs like so much noise candy, Nona's liquid velvet voice insinuates itself into your psyche, resonating with a gut-wrenching intensity. Two chicks and two dicks, trading off vocal duties, this one rocks. |
