Jacques . 1819--80, German-born French composer of many operettas, including Orpheus in the Underworld (1858), and of the opera The Tales of Hoffmann (1881) Offenbach2 a city in central Germany, on the River Main in Hesse opposite Frankfurt am Main: leather-goods industry. Pop.: 119 208 (2003 est.) Offenbach a city in the Federal Republic of Germany, in the Land of Hesse, and a port on the Main River. Population, 120,000 (1972). Offenbach has virtually merged with the city of Frankfurt am Main. It has machine-building and chemical industries and is a center for the leather industry.
