She began her career in 1977 in the Treasury and is possibly best known for her successful five-year tenure as Head of UK Gas Regulator Ofgas, a role she occupied from 1993 to 1998.
The uncertain position of the demerged company, BG, continued following a Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) referral by Ofgas in October 1996 after Transco (the gas transportation and storage arm of BG) was unable to agree a revised pricing formula with the regulator.
