Oka River

Oka River

River, western Russia. The largest right-bank tributary of the Volga River, it flows 932 mi (1,500 km) north to Kaluga, then east to join the Volga at Nizhny Novgorod. Navigable for most of its length, except during winter, it is an important trade artery for lumber and grain.

The Gazel minibus was carrying workers to Moscow when the driver decided to cross the frozen Oka River in the Nizhny Novgorod region, about 250 miles east of the capital.
In 1989, 500,000 tonnes of spilled oil contaminated the southern Tyumen region of Siberia; four years later, 420,000 tonnes of oil were spilled into the Oka River.
Pavlovo is located next to the Oka River, which is similar in size to the Tennessee River, without the TVA lakes.
