Name Origin: For the Okanogan River, which traverses the county. From a Salish Indian name possibly meaning 'meeting place [of water]' for the confluence of the Okanogan and Columbia rivers, or 'rendezvous' because they met here for their potlaches. Area (sq mi): 5315.16 (land 5268.07; water 47.09). Pop per sq mi: 7.60. Pop 2005: 39,782. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.60%; 1990-2000 18.60%. Pop 2000: 39,564 (White 71.70%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 14.40%; Asian 0.40%; Other 24.00%). Foreign born: 10.20%. Median age: 38.20. Income 2000: per capita $14,900; median household $29,726; Pop below poverty level: 21.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,609-$23,095. Unemployment 2004: 7.80%. Change from 2000: -3.00%.
