Okeechobee

a lake in southeastern Florida, in the USA. It has an area of approximately 2,600 sq km and reaches six m in depth. Its shores are marshy and partially sunken. The annual fluctuation in water level ranges up to 1 m. The Kissimmee River flows into the lake. Lake Okeechobee is drained by canals that connect it with the Atlantic Ocean and with the Caloosahatchee River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The canals were constructed as part of a long-range plan to make the lake boundaries permanent and to drain the surrounding areas for agricultural use. There is fishing and tourism. The city of Clewiston and a Seminole Indian reservation are situated on the southern shores of Lake Okeechobee.
