In east-central OK, east of Oklahoma City; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Creek lands. Name Origin: For a Creek town in Cleburne County, AL, probably transferred by the Creek Indians; name possibly means 'point between streams' or 'promontory.'

Area (sq mi): 628.91 (land 624.76; water 4.15). Pop per sq mi: 18.30.
Pop 2005: 11,434. State rank: 55. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.20%; 1990-2000 2.30%. Pop 2000: 11,814 (White 64.90%; Black or African American 10.40%; Hispanic or Latino 1.60%; Asian 0.10%; Other 24.10%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 38.60.
Income 2000: per capita $12,746; median household $24,324; Pop below poverty level: 23.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $15,119-$17,206.
