In east-central OK, south of Tulsa; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Creek lands. Name Origin: For a Creek town in Russell County, AL; from oki mulgi 'boiling waters,' probably referring to a spring.

Area (sq mi): 702.32 (land 696.97; water 5.34). Pop per sq mi: 57.00.
Pop 2005: 39,732. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.10%; 1990-2000 8.80%. Pop 2000: 39,685 (White 69.00%; Black or African American 10.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.20%; Other 19.80%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 36.90.
Income 2000: per capita $14,065; median household $27,652; Pop below poverty level: 18.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $17,397-$19,418.
