Olaf V, 1903–91, king of Norway (1957–91), son and successor of Haakon VII Haakon VII, 1872–1957, king of Norway (1905–57). Formerly Prince Charles, second son of King Frederick VIII of Denmark, he was elected by the Storting to the throne on the separation of Norway from Sweden in 1905 and took the name Haakon.

. In 1929 he married Princess Martha of Sweden (d. 1954). Following the German invasion of Norway, Olaf took an active part in the struggle for liberation. He assumed supreme command of the Norwegian forces in 1944 and returned to Norway in 1945. He was succeeded by his only son, Harold V Harold V or Harald V, 1937–, king of Norway (1991–); son of Olaf V. He lived in exile in Washington, D.C., during World War II and was educated at Oslo Katedralskole before taking up a military career.

(born July 2, 1903, Appleton House, near Sandringham, Norfolk, Eng.—died Jan. 17, 1991, Oslo, Nor.) King of Norway (1957–91). Son of King Haakon VII, Olaf became a celebrated sportsman, winning the gold medal in yachting at the 1928 Olympics. In World War II he lived in exile with his family in England and was named head of the Norwegian armed forces in 1944. From 1955 he served as regent for his father, whom he succeeded as king in 1957. Like other constitutional monarchs, Olaf's duties were largely ceremonial.
