Zakamennyi, Oleg Nikolaevich
Born Nov. 1 (14), 1914, in Kislovodsk; died Oct. 11, 1968, in Riga. Soviet architect. Zakamennyi graduated from the department of architecture and construction at the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute in Baku in 1939. He began working in Latvia in 1946. He was an instructor in the department of construction at Latvian University from 1954 to 1957 and at the Riga Polytechnic Institute from 1959 to 1968. Zakamennyi’s principal works in Riga include a monument to the soldiers of the Revolution of 1905 in Matis Cemetery (1956–59, in collaboration with others; State Prize of the Latvian SSR, I960), a school of music and choreography (1957–65), and a medical school (1961–63). He also designed the memorial commemorating the victims of the fascist terror in Salaspils (1964–67, in collaboration with others; Lenin Prize, 1970).
