Oliver, Joe “King” (1885–1938) jazz musician; born in Louisiana. Raised in New Orleans, he was a cornetist and a pioneer of jazz. He relocated to Chicago in 1919 and by 1923 his band, which included his protégé Louis Armstrong, had become the most influential in jazz.
