Oliver, Joe “King” (1885–1938) jazz musician; born in Louisiana. Raised in New Orleans, he was a cornetist and a pioneer of jazz. He relocated to Chicago in 1919 and by 1923 his band, which included his protégé Louis Armstrong, had become the most influential in jazz. He continued to lead groups on an intermittent basis until 1935.
