In southeastern MN, southeast of Mankato; established Feb 20, 1855 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For David Olmsted (1822-61), president of the first MN territorial legislature (1849-50) and first mayor of Saint Paul. Some claim S. Baldwin Olmstead (1810-78), a member of the territorial council (1854-55) when the county was formed.

Area (sq mi): 654.50 (land 653.01; water 1.49). Pop per sq mi: 207.00.
Pop 2005: 135,189. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.80%; 1990-2000 16.70%. Pop 2000: 124,277 (White 89.00%; Black or African American 2.70%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 4.30%; Other 2.70%). Foreign born: 7.90%. Median age: 35.00.
Income 2000: per capita $24,939; median household $51,316; Pop below poverty level: 6.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $32,555-$37,124.
Unemployment 2004: 4.00%. Change from 2000: 1.50%. Median travel time to work: 16.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 5.50%.

    The findings of the study came from data in the Olmsted County Study of Urinary Health Status among Men, a large cohort study of men living in Olmsted County, Minn, which followed 2,447 men ages 40 to 79 from 1990 to the present to assess various urologic outcomes among aging men.

    This included all residents of Rochester, Minnesota, first diagnosed with RA between January 1, 1955, and January 1, 1995, as well as all residents of Olmsted County diagnosed with RA between January 1, 1995, and January 1, 2000.
