Name Origin: For David Olmsted (1822-61), president of the first MN territorial legislature (1849-50) and first mayor of Saint Paul. Some claim S. Baldwin Olmstead (1810-78), a member of the territorial council (1854-55) when the county was formed. Area (sq mi): 654.50 (land 653.01; water 1.49). Pop per sq mi: 207.00. Pop 2005: 135,189. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.80%; 1990-2000 16.70%. Pop 2000: 124,277 (White 89.00%; Black or African American 2.70%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 4.30%; Other 2.70%).
