gold medal a medal of gold, awarded to the winner of a competition or race gold medal traditional first prize. [Western Cult: Misc.] See : Prize Gold Medal (full name, Gold Medal for Remarkable Success in Study and Work and for Exemplary Behavior), a medal conferred on graduates of secondary schools. In the USSR the Gold Medal was instituted by the June 21, 1944, resolution of the Sovnarkom (Council of People’s Commissars) of the USSR. According to the statute approved on Dec. 18, 1968, by the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the Gold Medal is conferred on graduates who have received an average grade of 5 in all subjects in grades 9 through 11, who have passed all final examinations with a grade of 5, whose behavior has been exemplary, and who have been active in the school’s public life. The Gold Medal is conferred by the pedagogical council of the school and must be subsequently confirmed by the corresponding agencies of public education. Students who graduate from schools with a Gold Medal have certain privileges in admission to institutions of higher learning. Prerevolutionary Russia also had a Gold Medal, which was instituted in 1828 on the basis of the Statute onGymnasiums. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
