Omoloi

Omoloi

 

a river in the Yakut ASSR. Length, 593 km; drains an area of 38,900 sq km. It rises in the Sietinde Range (system of the Verkhoiansk Range) and flows northward along the Kular Range. In its lower course it flows through a lowland, where it meanders. The Omoloi flows into Sytygan-Tala Bay (Buor-Kaia Gulf of the Laptev Sea), forming an estuary. It is fed by snow and rain. It freezes in October and thaws in early June. Large accumulations of Aufeis are found in the upper courses of the Omoloi and its tributaries. The main tributaries are the Buk-huruk, Ulakhan-Baky, Kuranakh-Iuriakh, and Arga-Iuriakh on the left and the Ulakhan-Kiuegiuliur on the right. The river is rich in fish. Arctic cisco is caught at the mouth of the Omoloi.
