(On2 Technologies, Inc., New York, www.on2.com) A video compression company that is known for its high-quality codecs at the lowest possible data rates. Founded in 1992 as The Duck Corporation, it was combined with another company in 1999 to become On2.com. In 2001, it was renamed On2 Technologies.

On2's TrueMotion was its first codec line for full-screen CD and DVD compression. Subsequent codecs used the VP designation such as VP4, VP5, VP6, etc. On2 codecs are used in Flash video, Skype's videoconferencing, AOL's video downloads, the Viewpoint Media Player and other products.

Google has reached an agreement to buy video compression technology vendor On2 Technologies in a stock deal worth about US$106.
Google on Wednesday took another step in its Web video strategy by announcing it will acquire On2 Technologies, a creator of high-quality video compression technology in order to boost its YouTube site.
